【Wenfeng Cloud Lecture Hall】 Academician Zhang Jingzhong Makes a Special Cloud Academic Report for the Teachers and Students of CQUPT

On May 15th, 2020, in response to the national strategic deployment of building a strong network country, digital China and smart society, Chongqing to  implement Chongqing’s innovation-driven development strategy led by big data intelligence, to build a new generation of national artificial intelligence innovation and development pilot area, and to further promote the construction of “One Place, Two Highlands” in our university, CQUPT invited Academician Zhang Jingzhong of Chinese Academy of Sciences to visit our university as a speaker of Wenfeng Cloud Lecture Hall at the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of CQUPT—Big Data Intelligence Series Lecture Activity, and he made a cloud academic report entitled “AI in My Opinion”. Vice President Xu Guanghong presided over the conference, and 300 teachers and students from inside and outside the university listened to the report online.

Academician Zhang Jingzhong expounded the principle and technical essence of AI in four aspects: the development process of AI technology, what AI can do and how to work, and AI and mathematics education. In the report, Zhang Jingzhong clarified what AI was, that is, perception, thinking and action of machine realization, which is essentially mathematics and calculation; he narrated and explained the history of three ups and downs of AI, and AI 1.0 composed of logic reasoning and expert system and AI 2.0 composed of probability statistics and deep learning became the mainstream, both of which had been numbers in essence learn how to combine AI 1.0 with AI 2.0, which would be the problem to be solved at this stage. He listed a series of applications of AI and the distribution of industries. He said that AI had been widely used in our lives, and that the main purpose of its application would be to benefit mankind. He also mentioned that scientific and technological achievements were a double-edged sword, and that we should develop responsible AI. He explained clearly how AI should work by taking six problems as examples: factorization, primitive function, automatic reasoning, problem-solving test, chess game judgment and image recognition. Finally, he expounded the relationship between mathematics and AI, the benefits of AI to mathematics education and how to promote the development of mathematics education with AI; in the field of education and scientific research, AI was first of all an assistant rather than a competitor.

This report further broadened the horizons of teachers and students in the AI science and technology frontier, aroused the enthusiasm of teachers and students to devote themselves to the research and development of core science and technology in the AI field, and had a strong inspiration and practicality for teachers and students in our university to carry out scientific research, especially an important guiding role in the future professional setting, scientific research, student employment and other work.

Zhang Jingzhong, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, mainly specializes in machine reasoning and educational mathematics. He is director of Automatic Reasoning and Cognition Laboratory, Chongqing Institute of Green Intelligent Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences; dean of Artificial Intelligence College, Chongqing Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences; dean of School of Computer, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications. He has put forward the idea of eliminating points, and created the theory and method of automatic generation of readable proof of geometric theorem, which won the first prize of Natural Science Award of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1995 and the second prize of National Natural Science Award in 1997. His applied research won the second prize of National Invention in 1982, and his popular science creation won the second prizes of National Science and Technology Progress respectively in 2005 and 2009.
