CQUPT Is Officially Accepted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) as An Academic Member Unit

CQUPT News (provided and edited by the Office of President)In December 2016, recommended by Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the United Nations International Telecommunication Union (ITU)passed a resolutionthat CQUPT has been officially accepted by ITU as an academic member unit, which means that CQUPT has the qualification of participating in such a discipline as information and communication technology (ICT) and doing research on affairs communication and cooperation as well as decision-making consultation in the global organization framework of ITU. Up to now, there have been seven Chinese colleges and universities that have been approved as ITU academic member units, including Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Chongqing University, Hubei University and Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications.

As one of 15 specialized agencies of the United Nations, ITU is in charge of ICT affairs and responsible for the distribution and the management of the globalradio-frequency spectrumand satellite orbit resources, the development of the global telecommunications standards, providing telecom assistance to developing countries in order to promote the global telecommunications development. ITU is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, composed of 193 member countries and more than 700 worldwide organizations members, organization associate members and academic members, which are typical in the global ICT industry.

Having joined in the ITU academic organization provides CQUPT an important academic platform to exchange, cooperate, and compete with the international counterparts on the same stage, expedites a channel of participating in international academic research activities, and carries out international industrial technology development and submitting international standards. It is of great significance for our university to further highlight characteristics of the ICT industry, strengthen the connotation development, speed up the internationalization process, enhance the scientific and technological innovation ability, and promote the level and influence of running a university. CQUPT has designated special persons responsible for the contact of ITU academic members, and organization of relevant work. Meanwhile, our university has joined the ITU WRC9.1.8 task research group organized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and now presides over a research project of “MTC Fixed Service Spectrum Use and Access Capacity”. Moreover, some members of our university has been assigned to participate in the preparatory group of ITU-D WTDC 2017 (World Telecommunication Development Conference) , specifically to carry out the theme content research work of “Sustainable Development Goals of ICT”. In the next step, CQUPT will organize and mobilize academic power at a more extensive level and participate deeply in ITU-related academic affairs: to strengthen communication and cooperation with ICT regulators, policy-making bodies and industry experts; to organize technical training and professional seminars; to participate in global and regional academic conferences to share academic achievements with international counterparts; to actively initiate and participate in research on emerging issues in the ICT sector; to submit global technical solutions, specifications, standards and recommendations; to provide ICT development strategy advice.
